About GIX
The Global Innovation Exchange (GIX) is a partnership between the University of Washington and Tsinghua University in China, with foundational support from Microsoft. It is designed to bring universities and industry together to work on real-world challenges in a project-based, globally focused learning environment. GIX pioneers new forms of teaching and learning by directly connecting world-class students with faculty from the United States, China, and other global research universities and research-led companies and nonprofits. These partners help identify real-world challenges and provide ongoing mentoring and support to a global student cohort, driving solutions from idea to impact.
About the MSTI program
From smart homes to smart health, connected devices are transforming our daily lives and powering innovation across the globe. UW’s new Master of Science in Technology Innovation teaches you how to design, develop and launch the connected solutions of the future. In this intensive 15-month program, students learn how to take an innovation from concept to development and launch. Students are immersed in project-based coursework in design thinking, technology development and entrepreneurship. Design thinking courses will teach students how to define a clear design problem and take a user-centered approach to the design process. Technology courses will cover topics such as managing data, signal processing, and hardware prototyping, while the entrepreneurship courses will focus on start-up basics, team building, marketing and intellectual property law.
For those interested in developing a global perspective on technology innovation, GIX offers a 21-month dual degree that combines the UW MSTI with a Master of Engineering in Data Science & Information Technology (MEDSIT) at Tsinghua University in China. Dual degree students complete the MSTI curriculum first, then continue their studies in Beijing for an additional six months to earn both the UW and Tsinghua degrees. The MEDSIT incorporates the experience of the MSTI program and goes into greater depth on marketing, data science, design and technology, and business development from the perspective of China’s business culture. You’ll complete your studies at Tsinghua with a master’s thesis that documents your unique research and scholarly contribution to a project undertaken during your studies. Instruction is in English.
